Potential Not Realised - Cringe Inducing
The subject matter of many of these podcasts is eminently fascinating. However, the delivery by the two hosts is, quite frankly unbearable. Peter certainly tries to give historical context where he can, but he is really up against it with his co-host Afua Who seems to see everything through the prism of racism, slavery and oppression. She seems to hate Britain’s history. Marley – Afua seems to glorify his promiscuity and control over his women folk (forbidding birth control) while he uses his wife to bring up his other partners kids as a full time nanny. Even in the 1970s he would have been seen as anti - feminist. This was blamed on historical slavery. Really? Not the fact he had a philandering absent father for a role model? Thatcher - Very little historical context here and also brushes over the fact that this was a major step forward for women’s rights. Lacks perspective. Rhodes – This was a sickly teenage boy in a foreign land who built a mining conglomerate in competition with many others. His scholarship legacy is still used today And has benefited many leaders. His railway dream was ambitious. Are Robert Mugabe and more recent Zim leaders black leaders to be adnired? What he achieved was hugely ambitious at the time. I persevered as long as I could but I'm afraid I just couldn't stomach the lack of historical perspective from Afua. Every subject seemed to be about her views taking precedence. Her balanced view is a chip on each shoulder. Peter nearly saved it but he was I'd say drowned in the virtue signalling message.Read full review »

I love the fact that these two are looking back at great names in history and assessing their impact of the world. Factual, relevant and with two experts at the helm. I love it!

I have loved every season and I get to find out stuff I never knew. Only thing is I was slightly disappointed that the Margret Thatcher episode did not mention the effect she had on the LGBTQ episode unless it did and I missed that

I enjoyed this discussion/debate. As someone who grew up in London during late 70s and 80s, Thatcher was such a domineering and enigmatic character who really did change the country towards free market capitalism, for better and for worse. This podcast charts that well. 👏 However the...Read full review »
