একবার গৌতম বুদ্ধ তাঁর কয়েকজন অনুসারী নিয়ে ভ্রমণ করছিলেন ।
পথে এক হ্রদ পড়লে বুদ্ধ তাঁর শিষ্যদের একজনকে বললেন, "আমি তৃষ্ণার্ত। আমার জন্য হ্রদ থেকে কিছু পানি আনো।"
শিষ্য হ্রদে গিয়ে পৌঁছানো মাত্র একটি গরুর গাড়ি হ্রদ অতিক্রম করতে শুরু করে। ফলে পানিতে ঘূর্ণন ওঠে এবং তা কর্দমাক্ত হয়ে যায়।
