Amateur History Gold
I'm already subscribed to Ray Harris's massive and excellent WW2 podcast. As a bit of a failed history student, I'm a keen fan of the History of Rome and History of Byzantium podcasts. So be warned - this is NOT like those podcasts! American Ray Harris plays a straight bat (mostly) to the abrasive, hilariously opinionated Aussie Cameron Reilly. This podcast is a more in-depth look at Julius Caesar, that would build on the information from the History of Rome podcast, or from common knowledge. It is history as entertainment, drawing out the juicy bits that makes you want to know more. For me, the laughs outweigh the pronunciation that is like acid in my ears or that the focus is occasionally wayward. The enthusiasm for the subject that gushes from Ray & Cam is what drives this podcast and and takes you along on the adventure. I listened to the first 7 episodes this week! I have now subscribed to the Napoleon podcast and look forward to starting on that. Ironically I think the best laughs to be had is the scathing analysis of negative reviews. Americans need to know that Cameron lives in Queensland, and they tend to disdain the rest of the world much like Americans do. Australians view America as a rich eccenctric uncle, we love you but your direction makes us worry a bit, not helped by the Australian love of "I told you so". PS - if you want dry, buy a book or an audiobook. For a grounding in Roman history, you cannot go past "From the Gracchi to Nero" by H H Scullard. However nothing brings the historical personae that Ray & Cam reference, particularly Marius, Sulla, Pompey & Julius Caesar, to life like Colleen McCullough's Roman series of historical novels. they are daunting in size and detail but meticulously researched and made accessible with maps, glossaries and a phonetic pronunciation guide. if this podcast whets your appetite for the period and you liked the HBO Rome series - reading these books will bring ancient Rome to life. More reviews of Life Of Caesar
The Life of Caesar podcast is an entertaining romp through the life and times of Julius Caesar, General, politician, and creator of the tastiest salads this side of the Mediterranean. In short, this podcast is more delicious than a corned beef and cream corn sandwich topped with bernaise sauce...Read full review »

Loving it! There are enough earnest, well researched and dryly presented historically themed podcasts out there. These two guys have established a great rapport and engaging on-line presence so that they can take us through these well known facts in a fresh and appealing manner. Many of the best...Read full review »

It was a welcome surprise to see Cameron co-hosting another in-depth historical/biographical podcast after I thoroughly enjoyed the Napoleon podcast (with David Markham) that entertained me for many days (it was somewhere between 80 and 100 hours of awesome content from memory) a few years ago....Read full review »
