In Alaska’s U.S. House race, Rep. Mary Peltola and challenger Nick Begich share similar views on economic issues but clash over abortion rights. Begich supports a federal ban after the 12th week of pregnancy and opposes public funding for infertility treatments and abortion services beyond the Hyde Amendment. Peltola, however, supports abortion rights and public funding for both IVF and abortion services.  Alaska is seeing a sharp increase in whooping cough cases, with 234 reported so far this year. Most cases were confirmed in the last two and a half months, marking a significant jump from recent years. The illness is particularly dangerous for young children, with one in three infants who contract it requiring hospitalization.  The Alaska Supreme Court is hearing arguments over whether Eric Hafner, a jailed out-of-state Democrat, should remain on Alaska’s general election ballot. Hafner only qualified for the ballot after two Republicans withdrew, and the Alaska Democratic Party is challenging his candidacy.  This fall, the Alaska DMV will introduce new driver’s licenses and ID cards featuring translucent polycarbonate material and laser-engraved security features. The enhanced cards are designed to be more secure and difficult to counterfeit, offering stronger protection against fraud.  Bartlett Regional Hospital has promoted its CFO, Joe Wanner, to the role of CEO.
