“Overall I really like this podcast, and listening to it and reading Aubrey’s books has definitely made me re-examine my own fat-phobia and the ingrained diet culture messages I’ve absorbed throughout my life. I’ve been listening since the first episode dropped. Many of their messages are good and valuable - fad diets definitely need debunking and their method of doing so is very entertaining.
On the other hand, though, I really struggled hearing their messages of “diets don’t work and always fail” with no counterbalance of good nutritional info. I also agree with other reviewers that the constant swear words (from both hosts) are a turn-off, and completely unnecessary.
**updated review after a couple more years of listening — the more I listened to this podcast, particularly recently, I realized that although the original intention may have been good (debunk fad diets and fight back against diet culture), Mike and Aubrey are not qualified or reliable sources of information.
Mike seems to have some bone to pick with academic researchers. He’s never done actual scientific research in any of these areas, and is not (as far as I can tell), trained in how to do scientific and academic studies on these topics. Yes the quacks deserve to be called out, but the vast majority of people who are dedicating their careers to researching nutrition and related topics in good faith do not deserve the treatment they sometimes get on this show.
If Aubrey is truly happy and comfortable in her body, that’s great, but she is an activist, not a nutritionist or endocrinologist, and clearly cherry picks the messages that she chooses to include.”
