It's not a podcast, it's a lifestyle choice
Bottom line and brass tacks here... As of 2015, the average life expectancy of a male is 76 and a female is 81. In other words, not immortal. You've only got so much time on this dustball planet before your time is up, you get shuffled off into the ether, and probably completely forgotten within 2-3 generations. Maybe four or five generations if you were wealthy and left your family a good hunk of wealth or did something really amazing like invent some device that turns cancer cells into platinum via some sort of amazeballs life-saving alchemy. But I digress... Point is, while you're roaming around on this planet, you're constantly making split-second decisions that will affect the rest of your mortal future, and it all boils down to opportunity costs. If you choose to do X, then you're not doing Y. The goal is to live life doing as many things as possible that were worth doing while minimizing the number of things that weren't. That's how you win at life... with your dying breath you look back at the cumulative total of the time you had, and you want the vast majority of it to be in the "worthwhile" column and not the "pointless and wasted" column. Matt and Mattingly's Ice Cream Social is worth your time. On the surface, it's a podcast billed as being funny and silly... and it certainly is. But it's more than that. It's like if you were granted a private audience with the Dalai Lama and he tells you a knock-knock joke. Yeah, it's a joke, but you're pretty sure there's something deeper going on that you just haven't wrapped your noodle around yet, and then five weeks from now in the middle of washing your hair, the lightbulb randomly goes on and you realize just how next-level it was. Paul, Matt, and Jacob have the kind of conversations you have with your closest friends. They're honest and uplifting, but also raw and real. Sometimes they'll spend an episode just making you laugh at juvenile antics, then turn around and spend the next episode giving you straight reality in the teeth with an aggressive comedic slant. That's really what comedy is about, and that's exactly what you'll get from Ice Cream Social... a podcast that doesn't really fit into a specific category, but rather comes with a comedy-shaped universal adaptor for all frames of mind and situations. If you're just looking for superficial laughs, you'll find them here. Looking for spirited banter to listen to on a long commute? You're in the right place. If you're looking for subtle incognito philosophical musings, you'll find those too. ICS... it may not always be what you thought you wanted, but it always turns out to be exactly what you needed.

I often (but not always) learn something, but more importantly, the show is always interesting and funny. One of my fave podcasts for sure.

Even if they weren't ridiculously funny and charming, even if they didn't have interesting guests on, even if they weren't great at interacting with their fans and even if they had not taught me everything I know about wrestling/Guided By Voices/Katy Perry's thematic decisions, they would still...Read full review »
