Pastor Twila Schock
As a Lutheran pastor, I am impressed with Kathy’s spiritual discipline. I wish I had it. I also appreciated her honesty with regard to being a widow, an orphan, and her presiding over an empty nest. As a survivor of crippling grief, I found that her narrative rang true. My questions arose from what felt like prosperity theology: “if you believe this, than this can happen.” I felt like God was being coopted to achieve the American dream. As a former missionary, I was exposed to refugees from Slovakia, Russia, Cameroon, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. While the Spirit’s power may enable us to maximize our gifts, the Christ to whom we bow is a reminder that — when our culture, economic circumstances, gender, etc. prevent us from experiencing success or, minimally, peace — we have a God who will not forsake us. My hope for Kathy is that she would find a healthy religious community (healthy is the operative word): I have found that spiritual community rids us of our spiritual narcissism. All of that said: we are all broken and in need of God’s grace. Kathy bore witness to that. Thank you for challenging me with this broadcast.
