“Every time I listen to an episode of NeoScum I am delighted by the talent of the performers, the deft GMing, and production values that are easily among the best in the actual play business. NeoScum is the only podcast I listen to that consistently makes me laugh out loud. The laughs don’t come from jokes delivered with a setup and a punchline, but from committed, character-driven improv at it’s finest. The PC’s antics are hilarious because they flow from relationships that feel real and relatable, and because the absurdity of the podcast always flows from the absurdity of the setting its characters inhabit, which feels like an episode of Black Mirror written as collab between Terry Pratchett and Terry Gilliam. The world this team has built together feels big and alive. Every NPC has a rich inner life, a tapestry of goals and dreams that the players inevitably light on fire and display as a frantically waving banner on their semi-truck/home Xanadu. In a medium where excellence in sound editing can turn a good podcast into a great one, the obvious devotion to excellence that Casey Toney has deserves special note. A big part of the reason NeoScum has such power to transport its listener into an offbeat cyberpunk dystopia is because the audio quality is stellar, and because the masterful editing does wonders for the pacing of the episodes. Gannon Reedy is an effortlessly good GM. He is a master of the “yes, and...” but keeps a firm hand on the reins of the story, always taking care to advance the plot and character development in interesting and engaging ways. Every performer on NeoScum would be the show stealer on any other podcast. Together, as a sum greater than their individually impressive parts, they have created characters and a world that I am always excited to come back to. NeoScum deserves a listen from anyone who is a fan of actual play, high quality comedy, or good stories.”
