More and more disconnected
Update. I downgraded my earlier review from 3 stars to 1. Here’s why: 1. The sound quality of episode 1 of season 2 was horrible. 2. Since today is Sunday, the 19th, the hosts are now 3 episodes behind for the second season. 3. The hosts are incredibly condescending. The male host actually used the words “your average mouth breather” when referring to people who may not watch this show. 4. I’m not sure is woman-splaining (by the way, if it is, I’d hate it as much as man-splaining) is a word, but the female host would have her picture in the dictionary next to the word. She actually spent time trying to explain something relatively simple about dynamics in the show that men wouldn’t understand and then went in to characterize all men as pretty much the same in their interpretation of the actions of the female characters. Earlier review: I have to say my interest in both the show and the podcast are waning. The host of the of cast seem as disconnected as some of the characters in the show. After getting beyond the podcast episode where one of the hosts finally realizes (after about 20 minutes) that if George goes to jail, it’s the ruination of the entire family, so social climbing should, perhaps, take a back seat for a moment. In the next episode we see the hosts rooting for one of the two men who are toying with a young woman’s affection. The fact that the two men are forced to be closeted is sad and unfortunate, but it’s not a good thing that John Adams is getting back at Oscar by doing the same thing he was doing. He of all people must know what it’s like to have your affections played with. The last thing I’d say is that I’m a fan of the Russell’s but when Bertha makes her way into Mrs. Astor’s house and is indignant when she has to go out through the servant’s doors, I was really disappointed at her reaction. The hosts seem to think it was a horrible trial for her. But the truth is she had forgotten that she wasn’t always who she is now. She’s looking down at the servants the way high society looks down on her. A little humility would have been nice. The only reason to feel sorry for her is that she doesn’t seem to be embracing the lesson that life is trying to teach her. As for the hosts saying she was made to leave as if she were at thief. Well, she snuck into someone’s home without the invitation of the owner. That’s a problem. Again, disconnected.

I used to follow this podcast but the quality has taken a nosedive. From a complete lack of apology for failing to update in a timely manner to blatant mistakes on air that are never acknowledged or re-recorded to using racist language like “gypped” and continuing to use an analogy that the...Read full review »

Always so much fun listening to these two. I love the opening credits too, Mike. I can’t wait to see and hear the rest of The Gilded Age season. Thank you guys for breaking it down for me.
