600 jobs at Timaru’s Alliance Smithfield meatworks plant are set to go under a new proposal put forward on Friday. A consultation period will run for just over two weeks before a decision is made in later in October. Affected staff will be able to apply for jobs at other plants, but redundancies are expected. Timaru's Mayor, Nigel Bowen, speaks about the decision.
