Reuben Schoots, the Australian watchmaker building a watch in his garage
Listen now
Description
Australia is about as far away from the watchmaking centres of the world as it's possible to get. That hasn't stopped Reuben Schoots, hailing from our nations capital, from learning the art, and building his own watch, from scratch. Several years ago, while Schoots was recovering from chronic illnesses he picked up while travelling, he was introduced to the world of mechanical watches and dived in head-first. Like many people newly enamoured with the topic, he picked up a copy of George Daniels' Watchmaking. Unlike many people he understood it. More than that, he undertook his own Daniels-inspired watchmaking project. This led to an interest in tool-making and, later, CNC technology. Next thing you know, Schoots has pre-sold six pieces from his first series, and watchmaking in Australia might very well be about to enter a new era.
