wonderings of a would-be, could-be fan
While I appreciate the fact of this show, and the analysis of language, and the casual format, and all the great stuff that the participants bring to the table (including their time/effort), I do in fact feel like Tanner dominates too much. Maybe I just want him to make his points with fewer words? Maybe because he has a strong voice I want him to be mic'd differently? Maybe he too rarely seems to question himself or wonder aloud? I don't mind that he's included, but his performance reminds me of the top Readers' Picks comment to the 6/6/15 NY Times opinion piece "What Makes a Woman?"(re Jenner). The (female-named) commenter recalled when a trans woman started to dominate a women's meeting. "Several years ago, I attended a meeting of women-born-women, with one transgendered woman. During its course, there was a bit of arguing, but just a bit. I noticed that the transgendered woman began to raise her voice slightly, and began to speak loudly, and authoritatively. The women gradually lowered their voices. I couldn't forget this, and couldn't exactly put my finger on why I felt this was not a good thing. I think I can place it now. When one has grown to maturity as a man, there is a difference in how he has learned to behave, (the male privilege thing). ... I have had much more exposure in recent years, but I notice this, not infrequently. I still don't like it." Insert white+male privilege instead of male privilege? To be clear, I don't draw an analogy between them and the commenter. Baratunde and Raquel do NOT stand down on the podcast. Rather I kind of identify with the women-born-women in that meeting. Tanner is verbose, loudish, authoritative ... and lightens it up (thankfully) with humorous asides, all while not really wondering aloud very much. Hmmmm....Read full review »

Smart, well-founded discussion about race. Left-leaning (if that's what you're into--I am), but with varied perspectives and some disagreement among panelists/co-hosts.Read full review »

Would be the movie Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles did more to bridge race relations more than any of these stupid leftist convos about giving black people a shoulder to whine on.
