Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more!

Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more!

Episode # 215 - Trevor Rabin discusses his new solo album "RIO" and more!
Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, recently announced ‘Rio’, his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years, set for release in just a week’s time on the 6th October 2023 worldwide.
Given that his previous vocal-led solo album, ‘Can’t Look Away’, was released in 1989 (2012’s ‘Jacaranda’ was all-instrumental), Rabin has kept us waiting for more than three decades for a follow-up. Trevor admits that there was pressure from all sides, including his own family, to have speeded up the process. However, the delay is excusable. Since leaving Yes following the ‘Talk’ album in 1994 and largely as a prequel to touring as part of ARW in 2016, the guitarist entered the time-consuming world of movie soundtracks. Not just any old movies, either. Trevor’s name appears as composer for such blockbusters as Con Air, Armageddon, Remember the Titans, Enemy Of The State, Deep Blue Sea, Glory Road, and Gone In 60 Seconds and both National Treasure movies, amongst many others. “Over the past ten years I was having ideas, concepts that I couldn’t implement due to my busy schedule,” he explains, adding: “To be honest, those years flew by in a flurry. I knew that this was the time, and once I found my momentum I worked on the album 24/7.”

The process proved a labour of love and as with his first and second solo records, ‘Trevor Rabin’ and ‘Face To Face’ (from 1977 and ’79 respectively), Rabin handled just about all of the instruments himself.

Stylistically, ‘Rio’– is tough to categorise. Besides guitar-driven rock-meets-pop, ‘Goodbye’ is Country & Western with an edgy drive, while ‘Tumbleweed’ begins in a burst of harmonies. No wonder its working title was ‘The Demographic Nightmare’.

“I wanted to get into many different areas,” Rabin states. “Of course there are ‘prog things’, but overall there are a lot of styles going on.”

As mentioned, Trevor plays the majority of the instruments on the record. However, on drums for a number of tracks is Lou Molino, while Trevor also contributes some drums and percussion. Vinnie Colaiuta provides drums on ‘Push’, and Rabin’s son Ryan Rabin helped out with some of the most important percussive arrangements. Along the way Trevor also drafted in a couple of friends, Dante Marchi and Liz Constantine, to sing back up on two songs, as well as Charlie Bisharat on violin.

(Nashville, TN) - July 12, 2023 - BROTHER CANE is set to make a triumphant return commemorating their 30th Anniversary. A U.S. celebration tour is set to begin October 26 in Woodstock, GA continuing through December 2nd in Memphis, TN. More dates are expected to be announced soon, see below for the initial itinerary and full details. In addition, their 1993 self-titled debut album, a timeless classic, will be reissued on October 20, 2023, and offered on vinyl for the first time igniting a wave of nostalgia and excitement among fans. Adding to the anticipation of this re-release, the band went back into the studio with longtime collaborator and multi-platinum producer Marti Frederiksen and recorded two brand new songs. “Blinded By the Sun” and “Are You In There Anymore,” are set to be released as a special 7” vinyl simultaneously.
As founding member Damon Johnson explains of reuniting, “It was our manager, Kevin, who suggested we do this now after hearing from fans at my other shows who kept asking ‘when is Brother Cane coming back?’ After Glenn and I had loosely talked over the years of playing music together again, we all felt the time was right for us now.”
Co-founding member, Glenn Maxey echoes the same sentiment, “Seldom does a person get the chance to relive a dream that they pursued in their twenties. It’s hard to put into words. I’m just extremely grateful for the chance to play great music with great friends at this time in my life. Let’s go!” As they hit the stage once again, fans can anticipate the live renditions of the band’s chart-topping favorites (“Got No Shame”, “And Fools Shine On”, “I Lie In The Bed I Make” and more), each performance capturing the energy and essence of Brother Cane's signature sound while reigniting the passion that made them favorites of their generation. This highly anticipated reunion tour promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, as they take audiences on a nostalgic journey through their extensive catalog while also introducing some exciting new material. Brother Cane's resurgence serves as a testament to the enduring power of their music.
At the heart of Brother Cane's long-awaited reunion are its founding members, Johnson (lead vocals, guitar) and Maxey (bass) who originally formed the band in 1991 in their hometown of Birmingham, AL. Johnson's distinctive guitar skills, vocals, and captivating stage presence, combined with Maxey's solid bass lines and rhythmic foundation, formed the core of the band's signature sound. Brother Cane found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album which delivered three singles: “Got No Shame”, “That Don’t Satisfy Me,” and “Hard Act to Follow” with “Got No Shame” reaching #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts earning the band U.S. tours with Aerosmith, Robert Plant and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The reunion of these talented and road tested musicians brings an added sense of authenticity and excitement to the tour. The chemistry between Damon and Glenn has stood the test of time, as their musical connection effortlessly translates into electrifying live performances. With their reunion, fans can expect a renewed energy and a deep sense of camaraderie on stage, as the founding members of Brother Cane join forces once again to captivate audiences with their raw talent and unwavering passion for their craft. Joining the duo for this reunion are longtime friends and fellow bandmates Jarred Pope (drums/Tom Keifer Band), Buck Johnson (keys/Aerosmith, Hollywood Vampires), and Tony Higbee (guitar/Tom Keifer Band).

Art Alexakis of Everclear - New Live Album, 2 New tracks, 30th Anniversary tour and more!

Art Alexakis of Everclear - New Live Album, 2 New tracks, 30th Anniversary tour and more!

Episode # 212 - Art Alexakis of Everclear - New Live Album, 2 New tracks, 30th Anniversary tour and more!
The band also has a new album coming out on September 8 on Sunset Blvd. Recordsentitled Live at the Whisky A Go Go. It’s a celebration of the band’s 30-plus year history and features live versions of the band’s signature songs including Santa Monica and Heroin Girl, amongst others, along with two new tracks. The first single, Sing Away, will also be released on September 8.

Everclear formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1991. The band was formed by Los Angeles native Alexakis, the band's lead songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist; and for most of the band's height of popularity, consisted of Craig Montoya on bass guitar and Greg Eklund on drums.

After the limited release of their independently released debut album, World of Noise, the band found success with their first three albums on Capitol Records: Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile, which were all certified platinum in sales.

However, the following two albums Songs from an American Movie Vol. Two: Good Time for a Bad Attitude and Slow Motion Daydream, were not as well received, and as sales suffered, Montoya and Eklund left the band shortly after in 2003.

After a brief stint of solo performances, Alexakis decided to push forward with the Everclear name, finding new musicians to perform with and releasing two more albums, Welcome to the Drama Club and Invisible Stars.

In 2012, Alexakis started a 1990s nostalgia tour, named the Summerland Tour, which occurs every summer with Everclear and other 1990s alternative rock bands. In April 2015, the band released a ninth studio album, entitled Black is the New Black.

Alexakis suffered through a troubled youth, beginning with his father walking out when Alexakis was a child. Financial hardships pushed his family into the slums of Los Angeles, where Alexakis became a heavy drug user. Eventually, Alexakis suffered a near-fatal cocaine overdose, which finally pushed him to clean up.

Seeking a change of location, Alexakis and his girlfriend moved to her hometown, Portland, Oregon. There, he placed an ad in local music weekly The Rocket, which earned two responses: bass player Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert. The name Everclear was chosen as a reference to the infamous grain alcohol.

The new band began recording in a friend's basement. The sessions culminated in two releases: the Nervous & Weird EP and the band's first full-length release World of Noise, both released by Portland's Tim/Kerr Records in 1993.

The band signed with Capitol Records in 1994. Just before their signing, Everclear parted ways with drummer Cuthbert, citing personality conflicts, and brought in drummer Greg Eklund. In May 1995, the band released their first album for the label, Sparkle and Fade.

The album's first single, "Heroin Girl", received some modest airplay via MTV's 120 Minutes, but was generally missed by the mainstream. However, near the end of 1995, the second single "Santa Monica" found a strong audience via the burgeoning alternative radio format, which eventually carried over to mainstream success. The album subsequently was certified platinum.

The band’s second album, So Much for the Afterglow, was released in October 1997. The first two singles from the album, "Everything to Everyone" and "I Will Buy You a New Life", performed modestly, but helped to begin a slow build for the album, while "Local God" was featured in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet in 1996 as well as on the soundtrack.

Following an extensive tour of the United States with Marcy Playground and Fastball, the band released Afterglow's third single, "Father of Mine.” The song catapulted the album and the band to mainstream success.

So Much for the Afterglow provided the band their only Grammy Award nomination to date, a Best Rock Instrumental nod in 1998 for "El Distort

Over the years they have worked with many of the top musicians in the world from Victor Wooten, Vinnie Appice, Rob Morgenstein, Jared James Nichols and more. IN THEORY is currently working with famed director Juan Ibanez on a new music video and music that will release in the summer of 2023.

Guitarist and producer Mike Mostert, has a captivating style with a powerful approach to IN THEORY's music and live performances. A former EMI signed artist, Mike has taken a new approach to music, combining the styles and influences of a lifetime to create a sound that generates excitement.
