PLAY RETRO 121: Excitebike is Exciting

Released by Nintendo in 1984 for the NES, Excitebike - a high-speed race against time, where the only thing hotter than the other racer's skills is your bike's overheated engine. Jump ramps, avoid mud pits, and push through grassy terrain in-between. Just try to keep your bike from turning into a stationary bonfire that leaves you running back from the sidelines. If you ever wondered what it's like to be a motocross daredevil who constantly risks spontaneous combustion, here ya go.

PLAY RETRO 120: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee & Exoddus

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997) and its sequel, Abe's Exoddus (1998), are quirky platformers by Oddworld Inhabitants that blend sinister corporate plots with fart jokes. In these 2d fixed / flip-screen platformer games, Abe, a Mudokon with a knack for trouble, stumbles upon his bosses' evil plan to turn his people into snacks and brews (literally). Armed with nothing but his wits and the ability to chat up and command other creatures through "GameSpeak," Abe embarks on a mission to sabotage RuptureFarms and SoulStorm Brewery.

PLAY RETRO 119: Dr. Mario vs Wario's Woods

Dr. Mario is a classic Nintendo puzzle game where you play as a plumber-turned-doctor trying to rid the world of viruses by tossing multicolored capsules into a bottle. It's like Tetris with a medical degree! "Wario's Woods" is a game where Toad gets to play Tetris with a grumpy forest of monsters, courtesy of the ever-greedy Wario. It’s basically a colorful, chaotic scramble to align critters and bombs before Wario can say "I'm-a gonna win!" Which one is better? Does it matter?

PLAY RETRO 118: Dig Dug Dig

This arcade classic from 1982 by Namco started the Digger genre proper and we haven't dug ourselves out yet. Players control the titular character, Dig Dug, as he tunnels through underground levels filled with enemies. The objective is to eliminate all the monsters by either inflating them until they burst or by crushing them with rocks. Players use Dig Dug's trusty pump to inflate enemies until they explode, and they can strategically dig through the dirt to create paths and trap enemies.

    PLAY RETRO 116: Wolverine!

    PLAY RETRO 116: Wolverine!

From Wolverine on the NES in 1991 to X2:Wolverine's Revenge on the PS2 in 2003, all of these titles share one thing in common. Their titular character and the inability of the developers to fully capture the essense of what makes a good Wolverine game. Most suffer from obscure plots where you scarcly encounter other mutants to poor game controls of a character that is poetry in meat slicing motion. The closest we get to having fun can be found on the GBC as city based platformer typical of the handheld and the "Almost" gets it X2: Wolverine's Revenge stealth game on the PS2, starring voice actors Mark Hammil and Patrick Stewart chewing up the scenery.

On the right track, stay retro!

I love the format and the discussion. I do think it can get a bit off topic, so you guys PLEASE don’t be afraid to make multiple episode/ parts of franchises if that means we get richer breakdowns. The episode length is perfect for details, so don’t stress to rush a week of 10 plus years if it means we get to explore the bits of highs and lows of a Franchise and learn more about them! Also it does feel like during some bits you guys really drop it on the prep work. You don’t have to be experts but at least make a clear attempt at getting it right. Honest mistakes are fine they happen but here it feels like Scot just ran with the wrong information and waits on chat to correct him if he gets to it. It looks bad on the prep work.

Love the show

Recently just came across this podcast looking for some good retro talk and I’ve found a new fave. The structure of the show keeps me listening, Scott and Brian’s banter reminds me of listening to my uncles talk about these games back in the 90s. I’m sure it’s been said plenty of times before but Scott reminds me of a non eccentric Jeff goldblum. Oh also, with how much they talk about Diablo I’m surprised there hasn’t been a Diablo episode, but I’m still working through the back log
