A necessary challenge to “classical liberals” and the IDW
At the start of 2020, I’d been listening to Rogan every day and Harris when I could. I’d come to think of them and the other IDW figures as intellectuals and champions of free thought via new atheist debate videos and the like. Throughout the pandemic, I began questioning my assumption that they act in good faith after clear misinformation -that I could debunk with a 5 minute Google search- became a staple of the shows. The Polite Conversation podcast has helped me to examine the facts and claims that I assumed were true, and I have found myself elated that my basic desire to treat people as people is not, in fact, discouraged by science or good reason. At times I find myself embarrassed by my previous thoughts and actions that were influenced by my assumption, but I cannot be more grateful to this podcast and it’s lovely host for helping me understand my cognitive errors.
