For anyone with problems for CollectNewspaperKarel.java not showing an applet when you hit run, check to make sure you have Stanford's Eclipse plugin installed. You can check their computer science website for how to do that (the link is given in one of their first handouts). Then when you have...Read full review »

This course is awesome! the instructor was born to teach this class and everything about it is great. Having one hiccup though with getting the programs to run in java. For example when I open CollectNewspaperKarel, a new window opens but it stays blank. no world or run program buttons, just a...Read full review »

I was already a senior CS student when I watched this course and I found it very well designed. The final assignment is impressive.

There course is really nice and everything but I don’t understand why after lecture 13, everything gets messed up and there some missing one, for example one of the lectures is number 28 but there are only 20 lecture here on the apple store ? so why not put everything ? hum

Does anyone know where to get the reading material?

This is a really good course, Mehran does a really good job. The only 2 problems are: 1. The Quality. It's so low, you can't read the writing from the computer. 2. It's a bit old, although I don't know, if that would change anything, it's still an issue. It's still good, because Mehran Sahami...Read full review »

Mehran Sahami is a great teacher. His casual and fun approach to the basics of Java make the class entertaining as well as educational. This was a refresher to Java programming for me and I found a number of topics that reminded me how flexible Java can be.

Eventhough it's been six years since i have started programming, and i'm quite a programmer, i watch this course in my spare times and i really liked the way professor Sahami teaches fundamental programming concepts (honestly sometimes i learn stuffs too)...

I love the teacher and the course looks really good, but due to the downgraded quality on the video file that is distributed through iTunes U I can't see/read the text that is presented when the teacher demonstrates programming. :-/ I can't understand why Standford don't offer HD quality on the...Read full review »

Great course, great professor, poor video quality. It's very difficult to read what is on the screen but he uses the chalkboard most of the time so it's ok.

Instructor is a good guy. I've never been able to nail down any of the concepts of OOP until I started watching this series. Rock on, Mehran! Wonder how he feels to know he finally made it to the millions of people he was talking about in the first lecture.

If this guy was my CS teacher in college i would have been a programmer. Clear and concise. great class and its FREE!!!!

Mehran is an awesome professor, and ther course taught me so much. My only concern is the video lectures are out of skew. A couple of examples are 1) Course 15 is 12 and 2) Course 28 is 15 and the actual course 28 is missing.

Prof. Mehran Sahami, explains everything in simple examples. This is better than setting in college taking this course. Plus it is Stanford!
BigTexApp via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 08/26/12
I laugh so much when I listen to the lecture, and he explains the programming terms and concepts so clear and easy to understand. Sometimes I watch his lecture on bus with iPod, and I wouldn't hold myself from laughing, I must been looking weird to others on bus!
StarangelAM via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 07/31/12
Professor Mehran Sahami really teaches brilliantly! His clear, structured, uncluttered explanations, and the very apt examples are a huge help in understanding and retaining the concepts in ones mind. I loved the lectures and learnt a lot.

This course is quick, easy to follow, and has really helped to clarify fundamental programming/software engineering concepts, vocabulary, and common coding practices that I haven't gotten after 8months in an actual online undergrad program. Very helpful. The videos are rather poor, and you can't...Read full review »

Is this honestly the way the 'Great stanford' teaches people? I would of assumed the students in the class would of been alot smarter. I mean, do they need to be spoonfed the basics at such a slow rate and then have sweets thrown at them like monkeys to congratulate them on paying attention!
MrWhyte111 via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 02/05/12
Top!

I learned to program at a community college. My professor, however, was a recently minted MIT Ph'd. Then I went to a state school. I really love the style and the carisma of Mehran, but the SD resolution is just not enough. I'm just watching this for fun, but someone who would try to learn new things with this course would be in trouble. Most of the code is unreadable. So a HD version would be nice if it's possible.

Wow. If you've never done coding before, are currently taking an entry-level coding class, or (like me) are a grad student who took one coding class and promptly forgot it, this resource is great.
