“I am awake, it’s still dark outside. It’s Christmas Day but the madness is yet to begin. Family first but my mind just wanders to the Boxing Day fixture versus NorthPole Town. Heaven knows we need a result.
Everyone is now up so I head downstairs. Not as fit as I used to be, but I still negotiate the stairs like a young Sally Gunnell. You never lose it.
Everything is good, presents exchanged, breakfast enjoyed. Mrs Barnes always puts on a lovely Christmas spread. I even turned down a chamomile tea in favour of a Buck’s Fizz. Buck’s Fizz is a peculiar combination of orange and champagne, but somehow it works. Although we prefer to use Prosecco. Same flavour, half the price. Years of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market has served me well. Peter Penrice once told me there was a music group of the same name, but I am not so sure.
But something is on my mind, and not just the little and large strike force scoring for fun for NorthPole Town. It maybe Christmas Day, but all I want to do is listen to the Quickly Kevin Christmas Quiz. I feel it shouldn’t be a crime but I don’t think my family will see it that way.
Instead I do my duty, and we all get ready to go for a family walk. Then, all of a sudden the greatest mystery of my life finally has an answer. Walking down the street is my faithful secretary. But she is not alone. Does she have a husband? Maybe he is just a chum. Who knows? I will soon. As we meet and say hello, the man she is with has a striking resemblance for Steffa Bruce. Holding hands, they are for sure a couple.
I introduce myself, “hello, my name is Steve, Steve Barnes, although I am sure you know who I am” a little bit of bragging won’t hurt anyone. We shake hands, and he introduces himself too “Hi Steven, pleasure to meet you...my name is Reggie Sharp” Something smells fishy, time to do some detective work...”
