Playmaker
I sighed to myself, ashamed at the way I spoken to Julie as I stormed towards my office. My daily polite request for a cup of camomile tea was more of a demand and I made a mental note to apologise to her later. After all, I was brought up properly by Sheenagh and Joe, or Mam and Dad as I called them, not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, like some. But this morning, something had irritated me on the radio. I usually listen to the greats like the best of Sting or Jimmy Nail, the superior entertainment system of the Jaguar XJ8 somehow elevating the songs to an even higher level, but occasionally listen to local radio to keep abreast of the latest goings on and help me make small talk with some of the ground staff. Today was one of those days and the morning presenters were discussing me in less than complimentary terms. If they had criticised results or performance then my strong, broad shoulders could have easily beared that load. After all, I carry the hopes and dreams of literally thousands of people every week. No, this was a personal attack on me and the wannabe comedians turned broadcasters had overstepped the mark, especially when mocking my appearance and my column in the match day programme. Sure, I may have put on 4-5 stones since hanging up my Mitre Pro Targas, but which manager doesn’t? And I always considered myself to have an above average grasp on written English, especially for a lad who left school to pursue his dreams of becoming a top class footballer. Not just pursue, I thought to myself, and I smiled in the knowledge those those three jokers, in the pejorative sense of course, don’t have a mahogany display cabinet full of glimmering medals, including the highly coveted European Cup winner’s medal. Anyway, I had bigger fish to fry, like investigating why my new Portuguese playmaker hadn’t been in training for the last two days, and I began to wonder how the weather was in the Algarve at this time of year.
