Listen now
Description
Every year, the RAR team gathers to watch the American Library Association (ALA) Youth Media Awards. Once, we went in person (!) but the past two years, we've watched together from home and texted each other like mad the whole time. The awards have a way of bringing out BIG feelings. These are basically the Oscars for children's books, and as you'll hear, we have a few Opinions (with a capital O), here at RAR. Ahem. Today we're sharing: * Some stand-out winners from the 2021 ALA Awards * Which books we put on hold at the library as the awards were happening* Just a couple of books we think should have been honored. Instead of ending as the book closes, this story is really just beginning."Kortney Garrison on Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks "(The Cat Man of Aleppo) helps us walk a mile in another's shoes. It so powerfully displays the difference that one person, one heart, can make in the world."Kara Anderson "The storytelling alone that happens in just the illustrations makes this book stand head and shoulders above so many others. I really think it deserved a little ALA attention."Sarah Mackenzie LINKS FROM THIS EPISODE: * Picture Book Biographies Book List* RAR #164: Our Favorite Way to Read Through History (and a new FREE resource)* Abigail Halpin: Itzhak project* American Library Association (ALA) Youth Media Award Winners* David Macaulay* RAR #170: How to Read a Wordless Book* Math Read-Alouds Book List* Connect with Kortney* Connect with Kara BOOKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: (All links are Amazon affiliate links.)
