“I just wanted to chime in on the Jeffrey Danham hub bub bub. So to answer the question Roy asked “ Can you be racist as a ventriloquist , if you( the comic) are disappearing into a persona of another thing (dummy)?”
And the answer is yes, and it maybe more than a comic using a racist trope or slur. Because of the extra effort of him crafting a black doll as a conduit for his material. It’s like blackface via ventriloquism. Is a physical symbol of the joke. An example is Mami figurines.
When the job is to be funny and you use provocative means as a tool often enough people get mad. But, that’s what make comedy an art, and JD a professional comic. JD took the risk and the world lite him up for it. And he has been compensated well for his attempt.
So that’s my two cents. I love the show and that you guys are entertaining this dialogue. This podcast and the work all you do is essential and appreciated.”
