“I’ve been studying the ancient Norse for several years- their history, material and social culture, and their literature. These guys don’t just know the sagas, they understand very well how this particular literary form works. As academics in the field, they provide deep observations about the characters, events, and even the forms of the sagas, and often go further to give historical and cultural context necessary for the listener to fully understand what all that means.
Also, and this is important: they’re totally fun goofballs. If anything I wrote above gave you the impression that this is dry listening, forget it. The two hosts have the chemistry of genuine friends, and the show is loaded with them giving each other crap and BSing about the material as friends will do. They’ve developed a format that gives each episode just barely enough consistent form to be a show rather than a ramble, but leaves them plenty of room to have fun.
