History + Literature + Podcast = Win
I found this podcast via the Rex Factor guys and I like it a lot. I’ve wanted to read the Sagas for a while and this is a great way to enjoy them before actually sitting down with them yourself. John and Andy are funny, and funniest when they push the boundary of the family-friendly podcast designation. The episodes are pretty long, but they are broken into parts well enough that I can pause after going for a run or making lunch and come back to the story later. I like the fact that they bring what I suspect is their own academic research into their conversations. They talk about stuff like infanticide, disability, and the role of women in Icelandic society, and I feel like I’m getting something closer to what I’d get from a college class on the Sagas—which (for me) is great! I’ve actually used points they’ve made about Icelandic law and society in talking about social contract theory in my own philosophy classes. My only criticism is that their academic jobs slow down their pace in releasing episodes. Publish or perish in the Academia Saga gets my vote for best bloodshed.

Sexton, are both knowledgeable and diligent scholars of medieval literature, but the show doesn't just inform. John and Andy have great chemistry, which they use to...Read full review »

I studied the sagas in undergrad and love Medieval history and old languages, so finding this podcast was the best thing ever. This podcast ties in a lot of linguistics, history, and even pop culture to help explain the sagas and their historical context. John and Andy are clearly very...Read full review »
