Sean Caroll is great! I heard him first on Sam Harris' podcast (it seems every podcast I listen to these days is an interview with someone starting a podcast) and when SH said the two of them had a long running disagreement I knew I had to listen to SC carefully! (SH is a reasonably smart guy whose arrogance has gotten the better of him; read up on his dispute with Ezra Klein regarding Charles Murray to see how correct my opinion is here; you can thank me later.) Anyway, I've listened to 2.5 of SC's podcasts so far (Liv Borree -- totally fascinating pro poker player; and Carol Tavris -- super thoughtful social psychologist; plus a bit of the interview with the Italian physicist -- I'm not a scientist; I'm never gonna understand this). SC is a genius with a wide ranging mind. You should listen to him. Now, two points I'll make, one important, one unimportant. Important: SC is a well-established physics professor and he leads his podcast like a professor, not like an interviewer. It's a different skill and it's going to take him a while to learn to be an interviewer. Example: when talking with a subject, he treats the discussion like a professor talking to a student; he knows the answer and he's logically leading the interview subject to the right answer. That's why during the interview he keeps saying "Right", "Right". An interviewer, by contrast, brings the information out of the subject, and lets the subject show us the journey THEY are on. Thus an interviewer says "interesting" and "how fascinating" instead of "Right", "Right". Number two, unimportant: the name of the podcast and the graphic, with a tree turning into a brain turning into a light bulb are so cheesy 70s! He needs better graphics and a better name, but really, who cares, that stuff doesn't matter. Especially to Cal Tech geniuses. We have a better world because people like Sean Carroll are willing to put their time into making podcasts like this, so listen up and get smarter. 5 stars for sure. Hooray California!Read full review »

This is already one of my favorite podcasts. Sean is talking to all of the right people and asking all of the right questions in a succinct and interesting way. I’m definitely looking forward to future episodes and what they will teach me and everyone else listening. 🙌 Keep up the good work!

Sean Carol is a brilliant theoretical physicist based at Cal Tech. For some reason he has decided to take some time to produce a podcast. The result is amazing. And in it he covers a wide spectrum of interesting subjects, many of them quite distant from Physics. Among other things Carol has...Read full review »
