130. First Year Teaching? 5 Things I Wish I Had Known
Something that I remember so vividly is my first year teaching. I was bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and couldn’t wait to have my own classroom and make it my own. I had wanted this for so long that I was ready to jump in and do all that I could to be the best teacher I could be. And while that sounds like the right thing, it actually made me tired, stressed, and overwhelmed. So whether you’re fresh out of college, coming to teaching as a second career, or a veteran teacher wanting to learn from ...

As a former secondary science teacher, I know how hard y’all work and plan to create meaningful lessons and activities for your students and are always striving to do what’s best for them. A group of people who are educators who don’t always get a lot of credit but also put in a lot of work are administrators. And with National Administration Appreciation Day a few days ago, I wanted to take some time to give some praise and kudos to those administrators who are trustworthy, support teachers, and care about the students in their school. I’ve had so much fun and really enjoyed listening to my guest science teachers during my AP science teacher interview series. An Old Dog CAN Learn New Tricks!
I have been teaching for 25 years and enjoy listening to Rebecca’s podcasts because: 1. they remind me of curriculum ideas I may have had but never put into practice, 2. they motivate me to be the best teacher I can be, 3. I always learn something from her guest interviews, and 4. they remind me of best instructional practices. She also makes me laugh! I recommend her podcast to all of my teacher friends.
Fabulous Podcast!
I cannot put into words how much this podcast is helping me get through the end of the school year through meaningful reflection! Rebecca has so many helpful tips that are PRACTICAL to implement in anyone’s classroom. I have taught for 13 years, but I already have a running list of procedures and ideas for next year to better manage my classroom and work-life balance. My only regret is that I didn’t find it two years ago when she started. Thank you, Rebecca! The fact it is secondary science (I teach chemistry) is a big bonus, too!
