I am 64. Still love sex and drugs. Interest has not diminished. To be fair, my drugs are medical marijuana exclusively and my sex is with myself. Don’t assume us old guys have no interest. After all, we were around in the 60s. That doesn’t fade.

This podcast is driving in the car on a sunny afternoon with a good friend, prepping for dinner in a warm kitchen, The stories are so freaking good and the readers, for the most part, are really well paired to the story and really good performers. Sometimes funny, sometimes devastating, always...Read full review »

Impeccably delivered, witty and multi faceted. This is a must have for any modern cultural elite.

I have listened to Selected Shorts for a long time and used to love it. More recently, they have eschewed great writers ( one superb reading and story was Leonard Nimoy’s reading of a Cheever story- I will never forget it) and are doing nothing but readings of mediocre writers. Such a shame- this...Read full review »

I believe I’m a better person for taking the time to listen to these stories. The ones chosen are wise, entertaining, soulful and well crafted. I’m wanting to write like that, but it sure isn’t easy! The narrators are varied and well rehearsed. Each reader is very different from the...Read full review »

But if you ever bashed the president, I missed it. Could you please point out where this happened so I may listen? Puzzlesd72

Sad
Back in the day, this used to be a good listen, with solid stories and good narrators. Now it is is a trash heap of C- writing class efforts by people who don’t know anything about form much less content. Mostly awful presenters and always titterers in the background who would laugh at Hamlet.

However, keep your political opinion to yourself and stop bashing the President.

Every story on Selected Shorts is great fun to hear. It is great to listen on a walk or just lying in bed at night. Great production values, great readers. Keep up the outstanding work, PRI.

The stories are fun but the host piles on unnecessary “naughtiness” and is simply annoying.

I love selected shorts.. my only real complaint is that they keep recycling older episodes. I keep hoping for something new.
Zafirademiri1223 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 11/09/19
I could not follow. The reader was out of breath and trying to move so fast it was hard to understand. Take a breath bud. We are not going any where.

It doesn’t matter what race, gender, ethnicity or orientation, the stories read are wonderful. Thank you!!

This show had years (decades) of absolutely amazing selections of short stories -- the definitive readings for so many great, literary pieces. It's not quite what it used to be since Isaiah Sheffer left us, but they still got it. The show raises the form of the short story to it's...Read full review »

Love the Selected Shorts pod, but the ads for To Hot for Radio keep playing. No new episodes from 2017? I love the THR pod too.

I love the stories but I would love it even more if they would have more readers and authors of color.
Webuyevrykidmovie via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 12/12/18
If you listen to actual authors reading their and others short stories, there is none of this emotive acting out. What we have here in this podcast is over the top, and worst of all, distracts from the actual story.

Great short stories honor the complexities of ourselves that sometimes feel like burdens in the course of maintaining mundane daily processes. When read beautifully, they shake that mundanity away and lift the gem of human complexity out of its rubble.

I’m with the other reviewer about the censorship of words. Jeez, as a New Yorker subscriber for well over 15-years, I’ve read countless stories in each issue without the censorship. Censorship of the exact same words I can read in the issue is senseless and destroys the spirit of the story. If...Read full review »

Great stuff, but just so tired of so many words being censored. It really ruins an audio experience when there are constant breaks in the program. The censorship not only covers up all traditional swear words, but even casual words such as "darn" ending with "mn" and many...Read full review »

I really like the way these short stories are presented live, and you can hear the audience reactions. Listening then becomes a community act, as if you are in the room with everyone. The weekly themes are diverse and the actors who read the stories are often electrifying.

Outside of the annoying as hell Zabar’s commercials I love this podcast. Great format — short stories being read by actors who we all know. Occasionally, it misses the mark with the choice of reader but the stories are consistently wonderful.

Maybe about two in three episodes really hook me. But when they do, the stories really stay with me.

This is a wonderful show! The wide variety of stories. and actors who read them — along with wonderful hosts — have made me laugh, cry, feel, and think. I’ve listened to many of them more than once. I don’t know what I’d do without it!

I have loved Selected Shorts since Come to the Meadow was the theme, and I’d welcome that song back. Selected Shorts is like my meditation. Because I listened to Shorts for 20 years, I am so glad this podcast exists. I was heartbroken when the show went off air. What I don’t like—multiple...Read full review »

This is a truly wonderful podcast. The presenters are great and my only problem is getting drawn too much into the worlds the stories create while I am driving, or cutting food with a sharp knife.

I found this Pod by accident, while looking for something non-politics to listen to. This Pod is amazing. The Folks reading the stories make the story come alive. Definitely recommend.

Could have been good but messed it up. Get rid of the host - unneeded and detracts from the actual stories.

Short stories are one of the underappreciated mediums in culture today. It is amazing how much impact a well crafted short story can have. Combine that power with the incredible oratory prowess of famous actors and comedians and you have a show that is tough to beat and well worth the listen.

I love a good "story telling"! Either to fall asleep to or make work pass faster. Some have great stories buy, omg, the reader will ruin it with no emotion, too much emotion or very amateur "acting".
