“This is an important series that demystifies the teen treatment industry in Utah, including the paternalistic goals of Mormonism that fuel it. But it did feel like something was missing in the reporting. Some of the folks running these treatment centers don’t seem to have any interest in the children in their custody or an informed approach to treatment. So why would they be involved? What was in it for them? In the last episode, Daniel Taylor’s attorney suggested that state governments will pay for treatment for troubled teens. Then it dawned on me that the series does very little reporting on who pays, on the consumers, on why, besides Mormon family values, treatment centers are such a lucrative industry. It seems like the state of California, for instance, sending teen offenders to Utah for treatment in facilities with very few regulations could be its own episode. And when a state government does that, how are parents involved? What agency do they have? I feel as if I have more questions now that the series ended.”
