Mismatched Titles and Episodes
I’ve held off writing a review as I wanted to get through all seasons and episodes first. After encountering a handful of mislabeled episodes, I have to hit pause and say something about it because I’m already struggling to adapt to the narrative style and overall presentation of content. I’m close to giving up on this pod due to personal annoyances with Rachel’s delivery and accompanying music. The issue of mismatched episodes is not belong. For reference, I've been listening to older episodes from 2020 and early 2021. I most recently went to listen to episode 43 “Pride- Michael Wayne Ryan Part 1” and found myself listening to part 3. I checked parts two and three, hoping to stumble upon part 1 but… nope. Mistakes happen. I’m not the most organized human and I consider myself quite patient and forgiving. But this is not the first multi-part series that has an issue. The following are also mismatched: episode 9, “Envy: Jim Bakker v. Jerry Falwell Part 2” is actually part 2 of Columbine and episode 17, “Wrath: Jane Whaley Part 1,” is actually Jane Whaley part 2. Hopefully something can be done about this (if it’s even possible, I don’t pretend to know how this stuff works). The content of this podcast is fascinating. Unfortunately, the choices with regards to background sound are often distracting and don’t always compliment the story being told. Similarly, the narrator’s cadence and intonation are of putting, in my opinion. She gives the impression that she’s been put on the spot and told to cold read a college research paper aloud. Speaking of research, there are times when she focuses too heavily on her source material. She goes off into detailed (and long) explanations without making explicit connections to the person/people/group that, when she eventually returns to the story, I’m lost. This also adds to the overall feel I get that she’s reading a well-researched sociological dissertation rather than a narrative on an outlandish sinner (which is what I thought I had signed up for). Is the focus on psychoanalysis and understanding pathology? If so, that should be made explicitly clear in the podcast description. Finally, her introductions circle around all, going into far too much detail on something before saying “more on that later” or “I’ll go into more detail in a minute”. She does not establish a clear roadmap for listeners of what to expect as they listen. There are too many allusions and references and ancillary explanations for an intro; the intro should briefly lay out the main points without elaborating too much. If not, it’s hard to pinpoint where the intro ends and the “meat” begins. Unfortunately, this trend of meander along on detours permeates throughout entire episodes. There really is no clear structure; episodes start and bump along, weaving around between research, narrative, and “more on that later”. Honestly, this makes for good background noise while doing chores, if I’m being honest. But it also causes frustration and annoyance when you are interested or invested in the subject. I badly wanted to love this podcast but, it’s getting too difficult and annoying to keep listening in the way it’s being presented. It may work for you though, so give it a shot! I hope you love it, I really wanted to 😞Read full review »

I didn’t really like the 1st season- something was off about it- maybe still finding your groove? But season 2 is SO good!!! I’m glad I decided to come back and give this podcast another try.
