    411 - Olga Kott - Creating A Family Business

We are a family from Ukraine who have been living and working in the UK for over 17 years.
Our backgrounds were unrelated to the interior design business. But we always love craft , had ambitions, and lots of ideas.  Our shared passion and belief in each other led us to start Kott Soft Furnishings.

Our busy working studio is nestled in the beautiful countryside of Hampshire,  UK.

I’ve worked as a curtain maker for over 10 years and it's my absolute love and passion.

After being overwhelmed with orders, my husband joined me, leaving his previous job. He does upholstery and fitting and has become an integral part of our family business.

We are happy and united more than ever.

Together, we provide a comprehensive service, from initial measurements and fabric selection to the final fitting.
Our children also enjoy helping out, and perhaps one day, they will carry on our family business.

    410 - Listener Favorite - Laurie Gutberlet

Laurie Gutberlet began her business in February 2020.  Her one-person, small workroom is located in the Atlantic Coast region of Bethany Beach, DE.    The catalyst for Laurie's “startup” is largely due to the relationship built and training received from Susan Woodcock at Workroom Tech.  Laurie has a life-long love of sewing and always thought about doing professional work.  She figured “If not now, when?”  Her company name—SeaGlass Seams, LLC—is largely based on her location.  My work to date includes draperies, cushions, roman shades, valances, bedding, and those random projects of “can you sew this for me?”

Comradery

My workroom routine always involves listening to my podcasts. The Sew Much More Podcast is of course, at the top of my list. 😊
Hearing the conversations of other workroom owners provides a ‘kinship’ of sorts.
Our experiences are shared by others, both good and not so good. These stories are motivating, like that feeling we have attending the CWC conference or CHF conference in the past. Ceil provides us with a taste of that excitement of meeting our counterparts.
I enjoy learning about the road taken by others in our business. How they have made it to where they are now and what their plans are for their future. It helps me map out my goals, knowing what has and has not worked.
Thank you Ceil for a podcast well done!

Lisa@LJI ,

This Podcast is my new essential tool!

Listening to Ceil talk with various entrepreneurs in this industry and hearing all about how they got their start, what struggles they’ve had, what successes they’ve had, and what advice they can give to others has definitely been one of the best things I’ve discovered recently. I’ve operated my own workroom for 23 years, and I can identify with so many of these experiences, but also have gained a sense of direction for my future from listening. Thank you, Ceil, for doing this!

Feels like community

Working as a solo upholsterer can be so isolating, but listening to The Sew Much More podcast makes me feel like I’m in a room with my peers. At some point in every episode I find myself agreeing out loud with something a guest is saying 😅I look forward to every episode.
