“I think what frustrates me most is the lack of communication. You could have said, “Listen, the financial situation now that we’re independent is a bit different, so instead of the usual guest hosts while Mark and Simon are on the cruise, we’ll be pre-recording several weeks’ worth of shows in advance. That means we won’t be able to do the box office top ten, review new releases, or get guests to talk about current projects. And these pre-records will be significantly shorter – Take Two is probably going to be 15-20 minutes some weeks, rather than the hour we promised you when we launched. But we’ll be back to normal from [date], we’re really sorry for the disruption, and we value your continuing support.” People would have understood, rolled with it, and appreciated the transparency.
But instead you’ve released bizarre episodes devoted to re-reviewing old movies, begging for praise, and reading out the results of interminable Twitter polls, without acknowledging that anything has changed. It feels like the kind of cheap, insulting, cynical [birdsong] a certain flappy-handed contributor would rail against, if anyone else were to do it.
In the same way that Jaws isn’t about a shark, I never felt BBC Radio 5 Live's Film Review Show was about BBC Radio 5 Live. I thought the good doctors, the team behind the scenes, and the community of Wittertainees were what made it magic. And yet here we are: all that stuff has remained constant, but the show feels like a shadow of its former self. (And not just a shadow of the 5 Live days, but a shadow of what the Take itself was even just a year ago). I’m no fan of the BBC, and totally respect Mark and Simon’s reasons for leaving, but I find myself longing for a couple of the old super-subs – Anna Bogutskaya and Sanjeev Bhaskar, say – to be given a slot on 5 Live, because that seems like our best shot at a true successor to Wittertainment.
I expect the Take will be back to normal soon. The thing is, you haven’t said. And so now I won’t be around to hear it.”Read full review »

“Much like Jaws is not about a shark, this podcast is not about films. There are films in it. They occasionally pop up in the conversation, nibble a sailor and vanish to do the depths.
This is about friendship, shared experience, shared intrigue and shared life.
I for one cannot wait to...”Read full review »
