“I’ve listened to the good Doctors since 2014, a full decade, although I did listen to the archive back to 2012, so I can confidently class myself as a LTL.
In that time I’ve seen the show build up from essentially just a movie review format to a fantastic, 2hr+ work of art involving comedic rambling, fantastic listener emails, great movie reviews, discussions about home media, just a perfect blend of everything. Then things changed. Mark in particular couldn’t hide his political leanings and cover his disdain for a president located thousands of miles away. Presumably he got a talking to and threw a strop, and the good doctors decided to abandon the BBC and fork a path of their own. Maybe Simon got a chewing out as well. Either way they took a big risk.
I’m afraid it hasn’t paid off. Initially we got an 80 minute show, that was a slightly watered down version of the previous bbc podcast. Extra takes were available which I refused to pay for because this is a cost of living crisis and why should I pay for something that was free before. I often debated doing so but then I watched as the main show trickled down to 70 minutes, then 60, and then today 57. And the extra paid for pod appears to only be 17 minutes long!? Thank heavens I chose not to subscribe to that.
So 57 minutes now. In that we get barely any reviews, barely any passionate wittering (Simon in particular sounds utterly bereft of energy) and instead constant whining about Elon Musk, Donald Trump and the Tories. Listen lads if I wanted political commentary I’d download a political podcast okay? The fellas can’t even be bothered (or can no longer afford) to go into a studio anymore. And don’t even get me started on the adverts. It’s every 5 minutes! I don’t care about Shrink the Box! Or that curated movie service!
Finally let’s talk about desperation. Begging for 5 star reviews is utterly embarrassing. You want a 5 star review? How’s about deliver a 5 star show. How about actually sound like you care. How about get the weekly guests back and review every movie and maybe make this mess at least a shadow of its former self, cos at this point it’s just a ghost. Cut the political stuff too, we get you’re all liberals, but we aren’t here for that.
Honestly this podcast 3 years ago was the one I looked forward to the most. Now I see it download and just feel nonplussed. I’m not even angry. I’m just disappointed.”
