Promising foundation but falls short
I found this podcast after reading ‘Cultish’ and ‘Wordsl*t’ by Amanda Montell (both of which are incredibly well researched and written books) so I was very excited to hear about this podcast and to hear more about fanaticism in our every day lives. I appreciate that Amanda discusses a range of groups from silly ones to more serious levels of fanaticism, but sometimes the delivery for the latter topics does not reflect what’s being discussed. I think there’s also a lot of nuances that are not discussed or even briefly acknowledged when nuances are an incredibly important aspect of considering cults and why people follow them. In this regard, it’s jarring to hear a very lighthearted delivery about such serious topics and groups. I love the siller topics such as Stanley Cups and Fine Wine but there are many episodes centred around much more serious topics so it feels even more important to include nuance. Finally, one of the main reasons I don’t listen to the show as much as I used to is the amount of ads. I understand making an income and being compensated for the work you do but half a dozen ad reads in an ~50-70 min episode significantly hinders the listening experience. Overall I think the topics are truly fascinating but there are aspects which can unfortunately detract from the enjoyment and interest I feel listening to this podcast in a noticeable way.

This podcast could be so funny and fun but I always just ends up Talking about Trump! I get that he is a monster, but please, can we please talk about something else?

Love this podcast and it’s analyses of all things cultish from Jonestown to CrossFit. Love the fresh take on my favorite topic to obsess about. Well done!

I’m already extremely cynical about celebrity mega churches (having actually studied and attended them to see what they’re all about) and I am STUNNED by how quickly this episode really just turned into a thinly veiled critique of evangelicalism at large, with almost zero information about the...Read full review »
