Sam Harris and Murray
I enjoyed your interview with Sam Harris and support both of you on Patrion. I was upset by his inability to understand the motivation be behind Charles Murray’s position on IQ. Unlike many psychologists, I actually read the book he and his coauthor wrote, but unlike most psychologists together with John Jacobson I obtained the data that Murray and Herrnstein analyzed. I’m not surprised Sam Harris was hoodwinked. Here’s the problem, to draw their conclusions that social and financial interventions do no good for minority populations they analyzed the middle quintile and the upper quintile of the national sample that is been collected for decades by the Labor Department. Those data are stored at the Ohio State University where I am a professor. Anybody can obtain a copy of the entire database for $15, and it is supplied in a format suitable for analysis on a CD. When Jacobson and I reanalyzed the data using the bottom quintile and the middle quintile, we found massive effects of social interventions on improving all the markers of social functioning, achievement, and on a reliable proxy for IQ. The problem with the analysis Murray and Herrnstein did was that it is not possible to easily make average children (the middle quintile) achieve the heights that are achieved by the geniuses and gifted children in the top quintile. Almost by definition, it is not possible to improve much on average. Because Herrnstein is a psychologist and Murray is a right wing political public intellectual, I can safely surmise that they knew precisely what they were doing and set out to show exactly what they set out. This is ideology, not science.
