Ep. 11. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Nick Heyward

Ep. 11. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Nick Heyward

This week’s guest found fame in 1981 with his band Haircut 100 who’s debut album Pelican West peaked at Number 2 in the UK album chart and his songs Fantastic Day, Love Plus One and Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) were all smash hits until the band’s collapse shortly before production was about to begin on their second album. Since 1983 he’s been a hugely successful solo artist and has written some just beautiful songs such as Whistle Down The Wind, Kite and Blue Hat For A Blue Day, I’ve had the pleasure of working and writing with him and he’s been a great mentor over the years… We had such a cool conversation that took a few interesting tangents so I really hope you enjoy it. I’m so lucky to have him on the pod; this week’s guest is song-writing royalty: Nick Heyward.
For more info on Nick and his upcoming album visit www.nickheyward.com
Next week’s guest is Mat Hector a drummer best known for his work with Iggy Pop, Sinead O’ Connor and most recently Razorlight so make sure you tune in for that one.

Ep. 9. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Earl Slick

Ep. 9. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Earl Slick

Welcome to episode 9 of Stayin Alive with Jesse Smith, a podcast about creative people how they weather the storm of a life of the road.
Today’s guest is one of the reasons I started this podcast in the first place. A couple of years ago I was given the opportunity to go on a speaking tour as an interviewer which was a brand new discipline for me and it resulted in two tours on the road with one of the world’s greatest guitarists. He is undoubtably one of the best ever rock and roll side men, having played with David Bowie on and off for almost Forty years and also on John Lennon’s last two studio albums. He’s also written and recorded with Glen Matlock, Robert Smith, David Coverdale and Jim Diamond to name a few. We’ve become really good friends over the last few years and I really hope you enjoy our conversation. Today’s guest is the one and only - Earl Slick.
Next’s week’s guest is another incredible guitar player and one of my favourite episodes I’ve recorded, she is best known for playing guitar for Kate Nash and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and also helped create and incredible charity called Girls Rock London and is one of the mot inspirational women I know, so make sure you tune in for my conversation with Linda Buratto.

Ep. 8. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Tom Watson

Ep. 8. Stayin' Alive with Jesse Smith - Tom Watson

Welcome to Episode 8 of Stayin’ Alive with Jesse Smith, a podcast about creative people and how they navigate through the highways of the creative arts industries.
To discuss the issues facing the arts sector I was very grateful to be able to chat with Tom Watson – former deputy leader of the Labour Party and former Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. He also had a major role in the News International Phone Hacking scandal by bringing events at the News Of The World Public.
Tom retired from Politics in November 2019 and is now the Chair of UK Music. UK Music are an umbrella organisation that represent the music industry by working with The Musician’s Union, Help Musicians, PRS, PPL and many other industry bodies and lobby the government on their behalf with a collective voice.
Personally, Tom speaks openly about how he managed to reverse his Type 2 Diabetes condition through diet and exercise and published a book about it called Downsizing that we discuss in the pod.
He was a true gent and I really hope you enjoy our conversation. My guest for Episode 8 of Stayin’ Alive is Tom Watson.
Thanks again to Tom Watson, I’d also like to give a special mention and thanks to my great friend Tom Wilcox.
For more on Tom or to buy his book Downsizing visit https://tom-watson.com/
Next week’s guest is one of the greatest sidemen in the history of rock and roll. He was long time guitarist of David Bowie, John Lennon & Yoko Ono and has also collaborated with the likes of Robert Smith, David Coverdale, Glen Matlock and Jim Diamond. So make sure you hit subscribe and look forward to my conversation with Earl Slick.
