Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. 
After a wonderful, long visit, Grandmama Sesemann has to go back to her own house. Heidi and Clara miss her, but soon there is something to distract everyone from her departure. The Sesemann house is haunted! Every morning the front door is found to stand open, even though it has been double-locked every night! It takes Mr. Sesemann hurrying home from his business trip to solve the mystery.

She has already made a great friend and ally in Sebastian, and after an episode with some kittens, she knows she can rely on him to help her. When the village schoolmaster sends word that he expects Meadow Nuncle to send Heidi down to school, Nuncle has other ideas. Even the pastor comes to reason with him, but Nuncle is obstinate. Heidi will stay as free and happy as the little birds and the goats. But then Aunt Dete comes back to the high meadow and takes Heidi away with her to live as the companion to Clara Sesemann in Frankfurt. Heidi doesn’t want to leave, but she is consoled by the hope that she can return again soon to her grandfather and all she has learned to love so much.

All summer long she enjoys the mountains, and when winter comes, not only is the snow a different kind of beauty, but Heidi goes on a fast sled ride down to visit Goat Peter’s grandmother and finds in her another person to love.

Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. 
Here are the first two chapters of the enchanting story of Heidi, the little Swiss girl who is taken to live with her grandfather in a tiny cottage in the Alps. In these chapters you will hear how Heidi is taken up to Meadow Nuncle’s house by her Auntie Dete—and left there with him! She meets Goat Peter, makes a bed of sweet-smelling hay, and becomes acquainted with the two goats that will soon become such a big part of her life. 
I remember reading an old blue-bound copy of this story when I was a little girl. Certainly, this book was one of the reasons I learned to love mountains and high Alpine meadows. Even now, I still find myself wishing for a fresh bowl of bread and goat’s milk. I hope you enjoy getting to know Heidi over the next few weeks!
