Professional analysis; delivery is improving
Edit: several months after my below review, I imagine it might be a cooindicidence but I do think these podcasts have improved and so I became a patron. If it’s because of my review: good for them. I still think the various hosts could generally watch that the bickering and banter (e.g. arguing over who was right and who is never right; whose turn it is to talk) doesn’t go on and on too long because what’s funny for you is often very boring and tedious for listeners because… we aren’t there participating with you. I often end up skipping over the first 3-5 minutes of episodes to get past the nonsense and into the guts of the discussion. Not ideal. Jessica could work on eliminating the pretentious language like she says “utilises” when she could say “uses”. (Sorry for calling you out Jessica; it’s because you’re actually my favourite). But overall a great series of podcasts and I really appreciate the sophistication of the analysis, especially the combination of more literary analysis (perspective, editing, narrative, etc) with game theory and social theory. This podcast has opened up a whole new world of thinking about reality TV (and the nature of reality itself!) for me. You have brought me great joy; thank you. Original review: The RHAP survivor podcasts are lots of fun and full of great analytics, if often too long and rambly. But these podcasts have been going on long enough and are successful enough that it’s really time to invest in some communication training for the hosts. Especially Rob - I like him a lot, but every sentence has more filler words than all the rest of the words put together. And the Why ____________ Lost series is the best analytically BUT has a super awkward gendered dynamic where David is enacting that old school American male patriarchal dominance and so Jessica, who is a fantastic analyst, falls into giggling, submissive and obsequious. And oh my god every time she says “this player is desirous of” instead of “this player desires” or “this player wants” makes my English teacher head explode. (And do we need 10 minutes of how to follow the hosts on social media EVERY episode? Some of us have other things to listen to). Just lots of bad habits like that in all the hosts distract from the great content. Time to step it up out of the amateur league?

Rob makes hours of smart, considered, comedy gold. I love all the hours of podcasts nearly more than the show itself.
