“The woman who is considered the expert on Catholicism in the “Is the Catholic Church a Cult?” episode isn’t familiar enough with Catechism to be a reliable source. I, too, am an ex-Catholic (for a multitude of reasons) and was deeply indoctrinated in the faith. Based on what I was taught as a Catholic, several of her observations about the religion are too lenient. For instance, Lent is serious business down her in the Bible Belt and people make serious sacrifices to get into God’s good graces - it’s ridiculous. Not only are people expected to follow dietary restrictions during Lent, but they’re also expected to fast on certain days during Ordinary Time. And fellow parishioners and Catholic school teachers will “tell on you” if you don’t. I could go on and on, but please know this episode would’ve been more powerful if you’d had a more knowledgeable ex-Catholic with some real insight into the Church and Catechism because, yes, the Catholic Church is absolutely a cult. I mean, the woman on your episode doesn’t even pronounce “Catholicism” correctly. If you’re going to go after a religion, find an educated and reliable source.”
