“I think that the temptation, when someone with a lot of power commits sex crimes, is to make it a system problem. I’m not sure if that was really proven here, but it certainly was intimated. AA is treated very harshly as if it is also a method of treatment which it is not and does not claim to be. To compare a multi million dollar treatment corporation to AA is like comparing the Hilton Hotels to a homeless shelter. One is charging thousands of dollars just to walk in the door, and the other is a free support system that is open to all. AA doesn’t require any fees and also doesn’t claim to be anything more than alcoholics helping other alcoholics.
The first step in a 12 step program such as AA is to admit that you are powerless over your drug of choice, but the podcast uses that to say that women are encouraged to be powerless. It is completely out of context. No one is asked to handover their power; it is about admitting that you have so far failed moderate or control your use of your drug of choice, and that you need outside help to quit.”
