Welcome back to another episode of The 5'Oclock Book Club! This week we read and discussed one of 2022's most acclaimed books, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. If you're not a gamer, don't be off-put by this book's description - we aren't either. While centering around the lives of video game creators Sam and Sadie, this book is about everything and for everyone. If you are looking for a raw, real, and relatable story that will make you feel every emotion under the...

Hey, hey, hey!  Welcome back to another episode! We finally read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros! This was a first read for one of us and a second read for the other so we brought some different perspectives to the discussion. Fourth Wing is a stand-out within it's genre. We love the slow-burn enemies-to-lovers, we love the dragon mind bond convos, and we love ending on a cliff-hanger! Overall, we had only positive things to say about this adventurous, exciting, and ~steamy~ book. Can't wait to...

Welcome back to another episode of the 5 O'Clock Book Club! This week we read Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh. This one's for all my weird girls, this one's for all my grimy girls!!! Eileen is a truly strange novel about a truly strange woman told eloquently, but never pretentiously. Eileen reads like a modern-day The Bell Jar - a bleak and unfiltered look into the strange mind of its protagonist. If you love a character study that is told beautifully and, admittedly, not a lot happens, then this...

Hey guys!!!  Welcome back to another episode of The 5 O'Clock Book Club! This week we are delving into the dark romantasy series, Zodiac Academy, with book #1 The Awakening. What to say about this book? We certainly had our qualms, but overall this book was a fun, fast-paced, adventurous exploration of a new world! If you're looking for enjoyment and entertainment over objective literary quality then this might just be the series for you. The hot, mean boys are a bonus, of course. Best...

Hello listeners! We are back this week with a bit of a revamp (which we'll explain in the episode).  Welcome to our Halloween-ish episode. This is our third and final installment of spooky season reads and we had to go for the most iconic one: The Shining by Stephen King, of course! Pour up a drink and get ready to delve into the mysterious and terrifying Overlook Hotel. As two people who had seen the movie but not read the book, we were delightfully surprised by the new experience created by...

Hey everyone! This week for spooky season we read a modern classic, Coraline by Neil Gaiman. We discuss the almost unanswerable question of whether this novella is a children's book... a young adult's book... something else? Neil Gaiman himself isn't even sure. Nevertheless, Coraline is a fun and easy read (or you could just watch the movie - lol). We were both shocked at how true the movie adaptation stays to the book. Either way, pour up a drink and get ready for this week's...

Happy Wednesday! We are back with another episode of The 5 O'Clock Book Club! This week we read Incidents Around the House by Josh Mallerman. While horror books can be tough to be impressed by in an oversaturated genre, this one was certainly a breath of fresh air. Mallerman's interesting take on formatting truly amplifies the terror and unease of this spooky story and places the reader right alongside the characters. Definitely give this one a read! Pour up and listen up!!! See you next...

Hello again, we are back with another episode!!! Pour up a fat glass of wine (or martini), get settled, and enjoy our discussion on Educated, a memoir by Tara Westover. This book is mind-blowing in all the right ways: the intrigue and drama of a memoir meets the fantastic storytelling of a fiction novel meets the expert and precise writing style of an essay or dissertation! What more could you want??? We are obsessed with Tara and this is maybe our favorite book ever! Get ready to be swept up...

Hey guys! This week we read The Department of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans. This book is a collection of fictional short stories, plus a novella, that grapple with themes of race and gender in modern America. These stories dive deep into hard-hitting and timely questions of justice and discrimination in the United States without falling into preachy or tedious territory. If you are looking for a read that is as entertaining and enjoyable as it is eye-opening and meaningful, then...

Emily and SK here back with another book club discussion! This week we read Nestlings by Nat Cassidy. We've seen this book all over TikTok as a great introduction to spooky season, so we gave it a go. It was strange, it was grotesque, and it was full of ~ creatures ~. We are conclusively undecided on our feelings toward this book, so give it a read yourself! As always, pour up a drink, get comfortable, and enjoy the show! (Prepare yourself for our first-ever cold open on SK freaking out about...

Hellooooo listeners! It's Emily and SK back with another episode. This week we read Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, a story about small-town politics, family drama, teenagehood and coming of age, and culture and identity. We loved this book as evidenced by our highest average rating so far. This is a character-heavy book and we really dove into them so we recommend reading the book before listening!   Next week's book: Nestlings by Nat Cassidy    See you next Wednesday,  -Emily and SK 3

This week's read was The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry, a thriller written by a child trauma specialist. You're going to need a stiff drink in order to get ready for this wild storyline and semi-insufferable characters, so strap in. This book got into some pretty dark themes (child abuse, death/murder of humans and animals, etc...) so listener discretion is advised. As always, we hope you enjoy! Episodes will be coming out every Wednesday from here on out.    Next week's read: Little Fires...

(If you want to skip our banter, we get into Circe at 21:00).  Next week's book: The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry    -Em and SK 3

Emily and SK here! We figured we'd make a splash with our first episode and discuss the infamous 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James. Neither of us had read it before so we thought it would be a fun and silly way to get The 5 O'Clock Bookclub started. For an optimal listening experience pour up a fat glass of wine!!! Next week's book: I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jenette McCurdy
