It has been said that arches never sleep, that they are almost living in the way they adapt to change. Using case studies of Ely Cathedral in England and Chartres in France, the tracks on this album examine the way in which the design of arches developed in the early middle ages, and use mathematical models to explore some of the problems faced and overcome by the stone masons. This material makes up part of the course MST209, Mathematical methods and models.

Excellent presentation.
Presentation is excellent and short. It is the best explanation of gothic architecture I have seen, although I am not a student of engineering. The videos in and around the cathedrals are great, not your usual pan around. Hidden parts of the cathedral's structure are shown. The working models are especially illustrative. The triangulation of forces as diagramed in the models is not as clear as could be, but anyone who has studied geometry ought to be able to imagine a clearer diagram through similarity of triangles.
