Great podcast, but “grand finale” is not
Spoilers for season 3 episode 6 ahead. So, let me preface by saying that this is still one of my absolute favorite podcasts, despite my confusion, bafflement, and displeasure toward two specific things in the finale. The voice acting is superb, the audio quality is phenomenal, and I very much hold this podcast as a benchmark for narrative podcasts to grab my attention. The writing is great, and I’m one of the ones that enjoy season two just as much as season one. I liked season three as well...except that last episode. I keep hoping that it’s just a ploy on the characters’ parts to deceive the listening enemy, since it is established that they do listen to the podcast. And I keep yearning for a season four, and that hope was rekindled by the teaser you guys posted much more recently after 3.6. Even if it takes a while, because I know the worlds of Black Tapes, TANIS, Rabbits, and The Last Movie are all connected, please please please don’t disappoint. Take the time needed, good writing doesn’t come out of nowhere, but please at least let us know if there are definite plans to continue. Now, here’s the spoilers I warned of. It’s the two issues I have with the finale. Writing wise, it feels like this is where the ball got dropped. For one, The doctor’s father was well established as dead. It might have just been my impression, but I thought it was also very much confirmed fact. And then...a voicemail from the father? What? And the doctor believes it? I had to listen to that part a few times because I was so confused about what was going on. Now, the other issue I have is what I’m hoping was supposed to be a deliberate, preplanned deception by the characters for the antagonists listening to the podcast. Because that romance angle just comes out of nowhere with no character development up to that point about it. The doctor is established to still be in love with his wife, even though they’ve seen each other once in the many years she’s been in hiding. Alex knows this, respected it. And she never gave any inclination toward a romantic view of her friend. I feel like the writing and voice acting could have been better in that part, unless it is explained in a later episode that it was a deliberate ploy on their part. But there is no later episode, just a “season four teaser” and I will continue to make the effort to not be bitter. I will hold out hope that it will happen. Because that ending is not what the podcast deserves, and I know you guys are capable of so much better.
