Entering the mine, Donald and Justin reach a natural cavern long ago breached by the miners. Here they encounter a terror.

Donald and Justin check the entrance to the closed coal mine, it being a popular hangout for teenagers. Michael, at the urging of Jennifer, gets Julie who lives nearby so they can search the forest trails and clearings.

Michelle wakes screaming, the dreams and visions having taken their toll, breaking her spirit. She demands they cut the vacation short and leave immediately, only no one can find Brooke. The family separate to search for her.

Deep inside the mine, Kirk and the others encounter the faithful.

Mrs. Williams and her band prepare to search the abandoned mine that lies beneath the town.

The Allun, a bat-like creature summoned into this world, enters the Joyce residence late at night, traveling through the shadows, and traces a symbol on Elizabeth's forehead.

While celebrating Elizabeth's sixteenth birthday, Michelle learns that Donald and Justin had a sister, long deceased, and that Justin and Suzie had a second daughter, also dead. Their descriptions are that of the two dream guides.

Mrs. Williams, her son Kirk, and the other core members who had sworn to destroy the cult are meeting to discuss what to do. One of them, Albert, manages to identify the cult by comparing its activities to an all but forgotten faith. This long dead religion held its ceremonies underground.

Reading the book she acquired in the antique store. Elizabeth learns about the original races, including one of true evil which had been defeated and imprisoned.

Kirk informs his mother that another woman was found dead, apparently after giving birth. Yet, the doctors are positive that she was never pregnant. It makes little sense, but he believes it is related to the cultists they have been pursuing.

Michael’s efforts to woo Julie fail miserably. Michelle has yet another dream, different in that the original dream guide has been joined by a companion of similar age.

Michael hitches a ride into town with his mother and aunt in order to visit Julie, a close friend of his cousin Jennifer. After they part ways, Mrs. Williams spots the two women and confronts them in the street, publicly accusing them of being responsible for the death in the forest.

During a hunting trip in the mountains with his cousin Zach, Donald's oldest son Michael is given a demonstration of the other's cruelty. At the same time, a state trooper, Kirk the son of Mrs. Williams, is following up on a lead. He discovers the body of a woman who had been missing for several weeks deep within the forest.

Heading into town with Justin's wife Suzie, Elizabeth and Brooke visit an antique store where Elizabeth finds herself drawn to an old book about the occult, which she decides to purchase.

The relationship between Donald and Justin, long troubled, continues to improve. Michelle has another of the strange dreams.

A neighbor, Mrs. Williams, tells Michelle of a cult that is kidnapping and murdering young women and how the authorities refuse to believe her, much less take action. Upon learning Michelle is part of the Joyce family, the old woman drives her away in a fury.

After arriving at the home of Donald's brother Justin, along with his wife Suzie and children Jennifer and Zach, Michelle has a strange dream. She is deep underground where a mysterious girl tries desperately to show her something, but the object is veiled in darkness

A young woman flees through the forest, only to be seized and dragged once more into the coal mine. Meanwhile, the Joyce family (Donald and Michelle; their children Michael, Elizabeth, and Thomas; and Elizabeth’s friend Brooke) are traveling north to Pennsylvania for an extended vacation.
