It’s a good show
While many people judge this show based on the trailer, it is sometimes helpful to listen to the full show before leaving a review. Sure, the host starts out with a negative view of Laramie based on her teenage memories of the place, but she ends up reflecting on those memories, interrogating them, and recognizing that perhaps her assessment was wrong. The whole show is very reflective and introspective. Not only does Kim Barker interrogate numerous aspects of the case and the people involved, she also interrogates her own process and more broadly on the nature of investigation in general. It is a good listen. Well constructed, excellently mixed. If you are looking for a clean cut whodunnit, you will not find that here. And honestly, you probably aren’t finding it in the places you keep going to find it either.

I found this pod slow-going at first but persisted and am glad I did. I count on Serial/NYT to elevate the subjects it tackles and, in the end, this series brings nuance and subtlety I’ve rarely seen in true crime. I think someone approaching it from a “traditional” investigative true crime...Read full review »
