“I love Crime Junkie and other audiochuck shows, but this one wasn’t for me. I know the team put a lot of effort into their research, but it felt like this case didn’t actually go anywhere in the end—it definitely wasn’t enough information for a full podcast series.
At best, this could have been a single episode. Between the speculation and unnecessary re-enactments, there just wasn’t enough substance for a series.
While it may be frustrating that police are not forthcoming with information for podcast interviews, I don’t think it’s right for investigative journalists to assume they are fully entitled to police cooperation or information.
I’m also troubled by the fact that these journalists think it’s acceptable to show up at the private homes of people they suspect might be involved in a case (based solely on speculation), especially when those people have repeatedly declined to give an interview. That’s not journalism, it’s harassment.
My heart goes out to this poor family, and I hope that the media attention they’ve gained does lead to a conclusion from law enforcement so something good can come from all this.
I wish I could give a better review, but the “research,” storytelling, production quality, and ethics behind this podcast make me feel disinclined to listen to future audiochuck shows.”
