Entertaining, but not typical “true crime”
This was not a typical investigative true crime podcast, but I found it fascinating nonetheless. After the first few “just the facts ma’am” episodes that cover the crime, the show gets a littler more creative. There is obviously a lot of supposition and editorializing, and it’s unclear exactly how much of what the narrator goes on to describe as Tommy’s last few weeks is true or what’s a bit of a “what if it happened like this” set up. I found myself at times pausing to check the podcast description thinking “wait… IS this a fictional story?” In the end I didn’t really mind. I liked the supernatural spin the narrator posits. I found the production and quality of the narration very good and engaging. A lot of the negative reviews of this podcast have been people complaining this wasn’t really “true crime,” or not understanding that the subscription only episodes would eventually be free to listen to if you were just patient. When I listened I could binge all 8 main episodes for free. Also,A lot of reviews were kind of like “how dare he try to validate the Satanic Panic!” But I feel like… that was kind of the point? Like wouldn’t it be ironic if amidst all the ridiculousness of the Satanic Panic something like this actually happened to this boy? That’s how I took it anyway. It never felt to me like he was actually trying to say the Satanic Panic was justified. I do agree with the point a number of people have made that the show’s description should be more transparent about the format and content of this podcast. Is it true crime? To an extent. But it also has creative storytelling, supposition, and supernatural elements that don’t make it your typical investigative journalist true crime podcast documentary experience. I think if the description was a little more clear about the nature of the show less people would have been disappointed and given bad reviews and more people who would appreciate the show may have tried it.
