In this weeks show we talk about the Movie Greenland, and some prepping lessons we can take from it. While this movie is no different than most other disaster movies we’ve seen, it was well done, and much better than most B grade disaster movies. In this video we will go over some key takeaways like everyday carry, bugging out, communications, and how these topics apply in a number of disaster or SHTF situations…not just a planet killer event like the comet in the movie. How the government would reacts and how the people would react will be the same regardless of the disaster scenario. Advanced Warnings Big shocker here, but the movie starts out with the public being lied to about the severity of the comet. The people were told that a chunk of rock was going to land in the ocean. What actually unfolded was completely different. Some people were notified by text messaged that they were chosen to be taken to the bunker. We discusses how realistic each of these scenarios was, and what they might actually do. We also talked about how people who were chosen to be taken to the bunker were chosen based on their skills and usefulness in rebuilding society. While some people may see this as a little far fetched, this is exactly how we think of building or joining prepping groups. Everyday Carry & Being Ready One thing that the average person probably didn’t think about, but preppers did, was the importance of being ready in advance. This movie (and most disaster flicks) illustrates the Importance of Everyday Carry items, bug out bags, and avoiding dangerous situations. In the movie that did a good job of having their child’s diabetes medicine, but failed by putting in in his bag rather than theirs. Other important takeaways include always having your gas tank half full, and everything preppers always talk about with bugging out. Communications & infrastructure Throughout the movie there was very little mention about communications other than the times when the cell phones didn’t work. Newscasts on TV and radio seems to be on anytime you felt like listening. The reality in that some of this may be available, it all depends on the infrastructure. We also talked about how satellite communications like Starlink, ham radio and satellite phones could bypass the need for the electrical grid and phone towers. While you would still need a way to power your equipment, it would be possible with a decent solar setup. How People will React (the good, bad & Indifferent) We hear all the time about how the bad people will react, but the majority of people will be more concerned about themselves than looting an rioting. It’s also important to to keep in mind that even if people have good intentions initially, that could all change. In the show we talked about why it’s important to not become one of the good intentioned people that have to do something drastic for the survival of themselves or their family. This is exactly why we prepare. By being ready for whatever life throws at us, we also avoid putting ourselves in these situations.
