“It’s a fantastic premise, but it feels unfocused, with a lack of direction, and is ultimately a bit shallow.
The producers focus on the relationships between the inhabitants, but without any real sensitivity or depth, or even humour - despite all those things really being present in the conversation and context - because they become fixated on who had a crush on who and who is the least popular. It’s not that the inhabitants are boring at all, because they’re not - they’re super interesting. There is a lot of natural poetry and meaning in the situation and between the people but it is not handled by the producers deftly enough to let it show, and when humour doesn’t either, that’s not good.
And there’s little to no explanation of the subject beyond brief prefacing at the start. It would have been nice to explore why the volcano was selected, how much do we even really know about Mars, and the science of it all at a deeper level than mumbles of conjecture. I mean, it’s an incredible subject! And yet it feels like they could have been anywhere.”
