“Hartmann is an excellent historian, particularly geared toward the previous 50-100yrs of U.S. policy; as well as the rudiments of civics & the framers. He ties the news of the day to its historical origins and significance. As such, he digests and arranges multifaceted happenings into a coherent narrative the left might use to interface with our elected officials. The importance of the narrative cannot be underestimated as a lack thereof in the 80’s resulted in almost half a century of neoliberalism as well as the Overton window shifting substantially to the right-whereby the previous right is now considered center left.
On the other hand, if there is a critique to be made, it is that the very faculty of arranging history into a coherent narrative is also the thing that prevents Hartmann from being able to substantively challenge the status quo. Often, he is ready and eager to defend inaction within the ranks of the left leadership. A tendency towards incrementalism and technocratic elitism is understandable as it is the way in which Bill Clinton gained and held power. However, this also included deep and disastrous concessions toward the right. As such, rightward triangulation has become confabulated with the “intellectualism” the left has folded into its self. Therefore, the multifaceted, intersectional answer this moment in history requires of the answer should also include the capacity to challenge the status quo.
As a finger on the pulse of current events, Hartmann is indispensable for the narrative the left must build to change the present and future. Further, Hartmann provides a space in which leftists can gather, relate, and organize. As Hartmann advocates, the solution is action above knowledge. Thankfully, Hartmann provides both.
As a footnote, some sources who are able to challenge the status quo while building the unifying narrative needed include: TMBS, Economic Update, The Dig, This is Hell, Next Left, Start Making Sense, Flanders Show”
