“This is really an amazing podcast. As someone who spends a lot of time listening to and reading about history, every episode that Pierson puts out leaves me more impressed. After hitting his stride around episode 8 or 9, Pierson really takes off and this becomes one of the best history podcasts out there.
First and foremost, he is able to tell an engaging story in the format, striking the perfect balance of detail, narrative flow, and anecdote. This is no easy task, considering how easy it would be to get lost in the weeds on a given topic, or alternatively to rush through the history, leaving the listener overwhelmed. Pierson’s writing and delivery are very commendable.
Second, he is able to bring forward the insights of academic scholarship, and to review historiographical issues and debates, without losing the engaging and smooth flow. I think he even surpasses The History of Rome in this. He adds a lot of depth to his story through this, making it that much more informative to the listener.
Third, he has obviously put a lot of time and effort into the research. It would be easy, for a set of stories as easy to sensationalize as those of the Eastern Romans, to present a more shallow narrative. Pierson, however, seems to be committed to building up a deep knowledge of his subjects, and the podcast benefits greatly from his rigour.
I could go on, but will simply end by saying that I created a Patreon account just to support this podcast and am glad I did. The History of Byzantium is truly excellent. Give it a listen!”
