“Jack Henneman has superbly overachieved his goal of making history fun and interesting. This series, obviously a labor of love by a true history nerd, is a monumental piece of work that reflects serious scholarship, extensive research (how someone with a day job finds time to read all those books is a marvel), an awe-inspiring breadth of context, and excellent writing. Henneman‘s approach reminds us again and again to understand, the people and events of history in the context of their time.
And he is darn funny - smart-funny! Life is too short, and history too important, not to inject the humor that is inherent in the messy but magnificent human enterprise. This is serious history brought to life. My own favorite episodes are the ones on Cabeza de Vaca and his compadres, and of course Sir Francis Drake. Heck, they are all great.
Please don’t quit, Jack – you are doing the public an amazing service. We especially salute you in your battle against the weaponization of history and “Presentism.“ Huzzah!”
