Here For Scott Tobias
I could listen to Mr. Tobias talk about anything for hours. I’m a fan of Mr. Phipps as well, but unfortunately I find Miss Robinson and Miss Koskie’s remarks about the week’s movie pairing and topics a bit pompous and snobbish. I’m always interested in hearing intellectuals like this quartet talk about cinema (I marvel at their immense grasp of the English language to support their arguments— yes, smart people—especially when they’re way smarter than me, as in this case—are sometimes fun to listen to), it’s just that the ladies sometimes come across as rather pretentious (it’s the reason I refuse to listen to their parent podcast “Filmspotting”—I’ll never forget how those hosts spoke down to the fans of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise—-not a fan of that film series either but the smugness of those two hosts turned me off to that podcast permanently). I’ve left this one too at times, but Mr. Tobias brings me back when a particular film pairing is interesting. Also, I wish they would dump the obviously-scripted opening skit that they try to disguise as witty banter to start the shows. They think they’re being funny but the “comedy” usually lands like a bowling ball released from the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
